Annual trip travel insurance is easily purchased from any health insurance provider… just make certain you look through the fine print. For example, one of my friends bought a policy for his annual trip to Cozumel, Mexico, and ended up having compression problems while diving there. What he didn’t realize was that scuba diving was considered a dangerous activity, and was excluded from coverage. This poor guys had to shell out over twenty thousand dollars, out of pocket. How’s that for a travel story?
Let’s face it: travel insurance is an important part of planning. In my experience, the best way to get insurance for an annual trip is through a short term policy. These are generally very cheap, and don’t require a lot of paperwork. I’ve received acceptance for several online. It’s important to determine what coverage, if any, you currently receive. For example, many credit card companies offer free travel insurance if you use their card to book your trip. Most folks get some kind of coverage from either family, their job or the government; check it out and you may be pleasantly surprised.
Prior to purchasing the policy, compile a list of what you expect to do on your trip. Heed the lesson from my scuba diving friend, and list questionable activities at the top. These generally include scuba diving, sky diving, trekking, rock climbing, mountaineering, etc. If your most strenuous activity is applying sunscreen, you can forget about this step.
After you’ve reviewed your existing insurers, apply for a short term policy to cover the remainder. This will lower the overall cost of annual trip travel insurance.
