A telescope can be the most expensive piece of metal and glass that sits on your shelf, or it can be your family’s favorite toy. It all depends on how appropriate your decisions are when buying a telescope.

First, telescopes are not mere tubes with lenses at either end. Even the simplest ones are complex and relatively fragile, so they are not something to purchase until your children are mature enough to handle them with care.

Refracting telescopes are the simplest version. These scopes use precision-ground lenses at both the viewing end and the objective end (that’s the big end), and also may use Barlow lenses and a mirror to increase the light-gathering quality of your telescope. The best refracting telescopes may have up to eight lenses throughout their construction. Overall, refracting telescopes have low maintenance and are excellent for clear viewing of planets and detail viewing. Look for the ones that have achromatic or apochromatic lenses. Apochromatics are better, but they are also significantly more expensive, sometimes by a factor of 10x the cost.

Reflecting telescopes are the ones that have much fatter barrels. That’s because they depend on a well-cut mirror to collect light, rather than perfected achromatic or apochromatic lenses. While reflecting telescopes do a good job of gathering light so you can more easily view distant objects, they aren’t as good as a quality refracting telescope for seeing small details on closer objects. For instance, the craters of the moon may not look as clear in reflecting telescopes, though you can see all the stars that make up the Pleiades without any problem. Newtonian reflectors have some of the detail problem corrected, but they still aren’t perfect. And while refracting scopes need little maintenance, a reflecting telescope needs mirrors recoated every few years or it loses much of its light-gathering advantage. You may see high-end telescopes of this type marketed as Schmidt-Cassegrain.

There are a few other types of telescopes: the Ritchey-Chretien, which is a modified reflecting telescope; catadioptric telescopes, or compound scopes with elements of both refracting and reflecting types; and Schmidt camera telescope, a catadioptric scope designed specifically for photography. Because of price, most people opt for simpler refracting or reflecting telescopes for at least the first time out.

Selecting your telescope is not all you need to do; you must also select the proper mount, or tripod. The simplest is an alt-azimuth mount, which lets you move your scope up and down and left and right. More expensive are the equatorial mounts, which use alt-azimuth motion but also align themselves according to the earth’s spin to make it easier to track heavenly bodies. The best mounts are the motorized equatorial mounts, which can be programmed to not just align themselves properly but even to find specific star bodies for you.

Next, look at magnifying power. This is not as important as you might think. Most telescopes come with eyepieces that provide higher magnification power. Don’t pay attention to what the box says; instead, multiply the size in inches of the lens (on refracting) or mirror (on reflecting) of the scope by 50 to find out what the maximum useful magnification is, and depend on swapping out eyepieces to get your real magnification power. Lower magnifications are typically used much more than higher ones.

Larger telescopes in general, are better for viewing, but they are also more delicate. If you have a place where you’re going to set up a permanent viewing station, it’s worth it to get a large scope, but if you want high mobility, you should get a smaller good-quality scope.

If you live in a high-humidity area or a place where there are extremes of heat or cold in which you will be using your telescope, do not try to get away with a cheap telescope. Telescopes are very sensitive to both moisture and temperature, and your scope must be properly sealed to manage these extremes.

Finally, before buying a telescope, try to join a local astronomy club and check a few of the good ones out. Trying before you buy is always the best way to go, and you’ll pick up lots of great tips from other club members in the process.

The eclipse on January 26th is going to be an annular solar eclipse, and what that means is the moon will be rather far from the earth on that day, so it won’t completely cover the sun. The Moon will appear smaller than the Sun in the sky. In a total eclipse the Moon completely covers the Sun, and total eclipses seem to have more influence in Astrology than annular or penumbral eclipses. So, this eclipse will be bringing changes for us, but the changes won’t be as tremendous as they were back during the eclipse on August 1, 2008.

Eclipses mean changes, and most of us don’t like change. But, I think there could be some very good changes in store for us with the solar Eclipse on January 26th in Aquarius. I think… You can never really be sure if the effect will be positive or negative when Aquarius is involved. Aquarius is unpredictable. But, this eclipse will be conjunct Jupiter, the planet of good-luck and expansion. Lets face it, most of us on this planet are worried about money right now with the problems in the global exchange, and I think this eclipse will be ushering in a new beginning — a “New Deal.”

The lunar eclipse on February 9th will be a penumbral eclipse, which means that the outer shadow of the earth will eclipse the moon, but not the whole shadow. A penumbral eclipse is subtle and hard to observe. So, this eclipse will not be that powerful as far as affecting us in astrological terms. The Sun will be conjunct Neptune during this eclipse and Saturn and Uranus will be inconjunct to the eclipse. What this means is, we may have a tendency to want to hide from our responsibilities, and addictions could become more annoying. In fact, if we don’t hide from our duties and we try to deal with them, there is a strong probability that things won’t work out anyhow. Unless this eclipse is making an aspect to a planet or power point in our charts, then we probably won’t feel the effects much more than the day of the eclipse, February 9th.

Oh yes, and for those of us who are interested in watching the eclipses, the solar eclipse on January 26th will be at 2:59 AM EST and will be visible from northwestern Antarctica, Australia, southern Africa, southeast Asia, and the Indian Ocean. The lunar eclipse on February 9th will be at 9:38 AM EST and will be visible from Asia, Australia, eastern Europe, western North America, and the Indian and Pacific oceans.

And now, lets see how the eclipses will be affecting us! Time to get out your natal charts. The solar eclipse on January 26th will be at 6 degrees 30 minutes Aquarius. First thing you need to do is see which of your houses this eclipse will be occurring it. That will tell you what area of your life will be affected. Next lets look at your planets and power points. If you have any inner planets (Mercury through Mars) or power points between 4 and 9 degrees in Aquarius, Taurus, Leo, or Scorpio (fixed signs), this eclipse will put some challenges in front of you. There could be some sudden losses (or gains, can’t tell with Aquarius), but you will probably be dealing with more changes than the rest of us. If you have any planets between 4 and 9 degrees in Aquarius, Gemini, or Libra (air signs), then this eclipse may bring opportunities for you to make some wanted changes in your life.

The lunar eclipse on February 9th will be at 20 degrees 52 minutes Leo. So, if you have any inner planets or power points between 19 and 23 degrees in Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius, or Taurus (fixed signs), you may be dealing with losses or endings around this eclipse. But, they could end up bringing you to a better place in the long run, especially Scorpio and Taurus. If you have any inner planets or power points between 19 and 23 degrees in Leo, Sagittarius, or Aries (fire signs), this eclipse could be an opportunity to let go of something. You may be ready to do some housecleaning, or you may be ready to end a relationship. You may even find it easy to let go of bad habits (like smoking) at this time. In general, eclipses bring changes. Solar eclipses are for new beginnings, and lunar eclipses bring endings. Since John Mayer and Jennifer Aniston are one of the hottest couples currently in Hollywood, I thought it would be interesting to take a look at what planetary factors contributed to their break-up and then their subsequent decision to give their relationship another chance.

First of all, I must say that despite my initial cynical thoughts about them as a couple, they actually do have a lot of positive planetary configurations together. Their astrology charts combine to form many of the classic compatibility factors that indicate a very solid understanding of one another. On the other hand, they also have some very challenging configurations that are more stressful for them than most people due to their high public profiles.

Let’s start off by looking at the positive features.

In a compatibility chart, we need to start off by looking at how they relate to each other mentally, physically (attraction wise), and emotionally. We start off by looking at the most obvious feature of the astrology chart which is the sun sign of each person.

He has his sun in Libra and hers is in Aquarius. They are both Air Signs that are both at 23 degrees. This gives them an exact (perfect) trine which is very harmonious. This indicates that both of them are thinkers, talkers, and very cerebral. They have a mutual love of the exchange of thoughts and ideals.
This is an excellent indicator of compatibility on the most basic level. No matter what happens between them, they should always be able to effectively communicate their thoughts and feelings to each other effectively. Why? The reason is that they are both natural communicators.

Next up, we need to look at the Sun and Moon combinations. This will show us if the outward personality (sun) is in synch with the emotional nature (moon) of the other person. As just mentioned, John Mayer has his sun in Libra at 23 degrees. Jennifer Aniston has her moon in Sagittarius at 23 degrees. Once again, this gives us an exact aspect except this time it is a sextile. A sextile is a positive aspect that is generally thought to be a bit weaker than the trine. While this may be true to some measure, a sextile produces a feeling of excitement, curiosity, and fascination with each other.

This aspect makes them perpetually excited and enthusiastic to be with each other. Since Libra is an Air sign and Sagittarius is a Fire sign they are quite naturally compatible because his ideas are a source of inspiration and joy to her. Likewise, her abundant natural optimism gives him a strong sense of encouragement. The dynamic created here is that of a solid friendship where both people are able to easily relate to the feelings and needs of the other.

Interestingly enough, this sextile aspect just described is doubly reinforced due to that fact that Jennifer’s Sun in Aquarius makes a sextile to his Moon in Aquarius. This sextile isn’t nearly as strong as the previous one; however the energy is still there in action for both people to feel. The basic vibe of this relationship thus far is one of a very strong “you can always count on me” friendship quality to it.

Next up, we need to look at the moon placement for each person. Jennifer has her moon in Sagittarius at 23 degrees and John has his at 14 degrees also in Sagittarius. This produces a conjunction between their moons. This is highly significant. This means that on an emotional level they both have a yearning for freedom, exploration, adventure, and good old-fashioned fun. They both need heavy doses of these things to feel the most alive and in a word-happy.

Now, let’s move on to Venus and Mars and see how these planets come into play. Venus and Mars create the dynamic physical attraction that is so necessary in successful relationships. The Venus of one person needs to be in aspect to the Mars of the other and preferably in a harmonious aspect like a conjunction, trine, or sextile. In this relationship, Jennifer has her Mars in Scorpio and John has his Venus in Virgo. This creates another sextile; however in this case the sextile is somewhat weak. This means that there is a definite physical attraction between them, but there is some kind of adaptability going on.

What I’m saying is that if this aspect was a trine, the feeling upon first meeting would be “Wow, who IS this and why haven’t we met sooner”! Whereas a sextile feeling would be one where one person would find the other attractive and feel comfortable around the other person, but it wouldn’t have the same knock your socks off kind of feeling that a trine has.

When the question of relationship longevity comes into focus we see a powerful trine between John’s Saturn in Aries and Jennifer’s Moon in Sagittarius. This is a solid aspect giving the relationship a durability that gives each person the feeling that the other will always be there for them.

Lastly, we have one of the most significant aspects with John’s Mercury and Sun in Libra conjunct Jennifer’s rising sign (ascendant) in Libra. This is particularly noteworthy because it indicates that John and Jennifer truly identify with each other. They tend to have viewpoints, thinking processes, opinions, and instincts that blend perfectly with each other.

O.k., now let’s look at some of the more challenging aspects to balance out this picture.

First of all, John’s moon is square Jennifer’s Pluto. Interestingly enough, the reverse is also true; John’s Pluto is square Jennifer’s Moon. So what we see here is that this aspect is doubly reinforced. This is a truly intense aspect that makes each person magnetically drawn to the other on an emotional and sexual level. The passion felt here is red hot and never dull, but this aspect also gives each person a feeling of emotional vulnerability. There is a certain rawness to the nerves here where feelings of competitiveness and possessiveness are experienced. Some of the darker feelings will feel a bit irrational to each person, but the main objective here is an emotional transformation for each person. There mutual energies are forcing these two to either descend into jealous and petty bickering, fighting just for the sake of their egos OR they can choose to rise above the need to feed their egos and instead focus on a healthy and loving form of communication.

Even though these two do appreciate each other, they also seem to take each other for granted and/or can be self-indulgent with one’s needs over those of the other. This is symbolized by Jennifer’s Moon in Sagittarius square John’s Venus in Virgo. This aspect’s main purpose is for each person to learn the art of compromise, negotiation, and cooperation.

Alright, I have saved worst aspect for last here to discuss. Jennifer’s Saturn in Aries is square John’s Mar’s in Cancer. This can be an extremely frustrating aspect that usually means that they tend to strongly disagree on certain major issues going on in their lives. This will usually result in one person wanting to leap into action while the other person would much rather take a much more cautious approach. This can leave one person feeling seriously restricted and irritated and the other feeling like he/she was being pushed into doing something they didn’t want to do and feeling quite angry about it. As a side-note they may also experience some irritating sexual frustrations due to either their timing being off or there might be criticism of the approach or technique of one person.

The number of people asking advice regarding their love life and reading their love horoscopes is just overwhelming. The topic of relationships must be one of the most discussed about in the world. Just take a look at the divorce statistics or the statistics of police intervention showing that 75% of all police interventions are related to quarrels between neighbours, partners, family members etc. and clearly bring relationship issues to the foreground.

While ALL human beings are manipulative and compulsive in an unconscious way, there may be a gradation depending on certain planetary alignments or configurations that can be found in horoscopes of people who never ever seem to get relationships to work.

Due to diligent research of some highly respected astrologers, these indications may show whether or not someone is cut out for love. It’s quite important to know these configurations and to know yourself. Don’t be astonished if you fall into the category of people who are not cut out for love.

The Sun or Moon square the Ascendant is one of these indications that may be problematic. If you happen to have some of these alignments and you know yourself, you better take full responsability for your own life and don’t try to make someone else unhappy. Rather focus on friendship than (force) love. Sometimes you can’t make a love relationship to work if you don’t have the inborn capability, nor the tools to do so. If you don’t realize that sooner or later, you may be extremely manipulative indeed.

Love can be a wonderful thing, but it can be a devastating experience too if everything turns out the wrong way. In the worst case, people even get killed, murdered in these circumstances!

Better safe than sorry, no?

By raising your consciousness about your own self and your own capabilities you can prevent relationship issues. You don’t need to focus obsessively on love relationships any longer, but you should focus on friendship, general relationships and connections and what your heart and life’s mission is about. Here, astrology can be a big help.

You can’t always have it all: a wonderful partner, lovely children, a lot of money, etc. etc. After all, you are still on planet Earth and submitted to its own laws which are not fully understood yet.

So, if you KNOW yourself and you KNOW that you are not cut out for love, don’t obsess about it and don’t exclusively look for a love relationship any longer. And don’t worry! It will not work, it never will and never should. Instead, you certainly have other capabilities to focus on and to be aware of. Love has many dimensions and many faces.

Blend these significations and brainstorm on it and you’ll find what you love!

It will reveal so much about your inner being and drives that once you have found your true heart’s desire and the other dimensions of love, you will no longer obsess about your love life and will never look back to it. Instead you will enjoy your life NOW!

Score bargains at discount and warehouse stores. Save a few pennies to a few dollars by buying litter, leashes, bowls, beds, and treats at places that primarily cater to two-leggeds, such as Wal-Mart, Target, and Costco, instead of pet supply stores or pet boutiques. Stepping into the world of political prediction is a murky arena for an astrologer. My personal position is that I am for the good of all humanity, I want whoever wins to have a pure heart and intelligent mind, I want the candidate who will uplift and do what is right for the country, for all of humanity, and the planet. McCain’s chart also show that he will have a “date with destiny” by the beginning of December, meaning that he will be taking on something new in his life that will fulfill what he feels he needs to do in this life. This does not mean that he will be president, and it doesn’t mean he won’t: it is indicating he is about to make major changes in what he has been doing to fulfill a mission he feels is important.

Obama’s chart also shows he will lose something that is precious to him, yet in light of the health of his grandmother, (she is still alive at the time of this article) it may not be that he loses the presidential race he has been fighting for but his grandmother.

I think the most telling chart is not in the charts of the presidential candidates, but in the chart of Sarah Palin.

There are three reasons why I think that Senator Obama will win the presidential race.

1.) The day of the inauguration he has several indications of being in the public eye.
2.) In Michelle’s chart it indicates she will be concerned around her children for the next couple of years and their school will be changing, and that they will be moving.
3.) The evening of and following day of the election Sarah Palin chart is indicating that she will be very angry.

All of these influences could be manifested in other occasions, such as Palin being angry does not mean that McCain loses, it could mean her kids do or say something that embarrass her and she is mad at them. When you look at an astrological influence you must make a conclusion about where and how you think the influence will manifest. The simplest and most straight forward way to predict the astrological influence which is present on November 4th 2008 is to say the candidate that is not expected to win will win, however my conclusion is that Obama wins after a day of chaos at the polls.

An ever-popular option for students and graduates is the Gap Year but new research carried out by gapyear.com, the website which is dedicated to young people who want to travel before embarking on a university degree and prior to entering the world of work, has made the worrying discovery that a large number of these adventurers do not have the correct level of travel insurance.

Most young people choose to explore the world before continuing on to higher education and are therefore unwise as to the practical necessity of organising insurance for themselves. A large number are allocated financial support from parents, and in turn relinquish all financial and practical responsibility to them. When it comes to booking a trip, a large number of young people assume that their parents will take care of all the relevant documentation, including travel insurance. Furthermore, it is usually the parents who foot the bill if their under-insured children are involved in an accident or require medical attention abroad.

According to the research conducted by gapyear.com, over 25% of those who had elected to take a gap year abroad did not have adequate insurance and a large proportion had no insurance cover whatsoever. Not having to consider the importance of insurance in everyday life, young people can take an ambivalent attitude towards the importance of travel insurance and view it as a hindrance to the excitement of the adventure they are planning.

Moreover, there are some travelers who are of the misguided opinion that travel insurance is only a requirement if the trip involves the participation in extreme sporting activities, for example, skiing. However, a claim is actually more commonly made for an injury sustained during a mundane or unexpected activity. In addition, food poisoning is a common grievance of travelers who are more often than not visiting countries with different customs and dishes, which may be too exotic for a British constitution.

The reason for this is that not only will the student further his or her academic knowledge but, for most, university is the first opportunity that they will have to live away from home and the safety of parental guidance and support and therefore will learn the value of the mundane necessities in life, including having an adequate insurance policy.

Before you can learn how to read the tarot cards, you must choose a tarot card deck. Some say that they must be given to you, or you must find them: that is not the case (although, if you really believe that to be true, then, of course, it will be true for you). Although it is awesome if someone gives you a deck, or you discover one in your grandmother’s attic, that is not how most modern-day tarot card readers come across their decks. Now, once you have used your own psychic energy (your thoughts, infused with your spirit) to cleanse the vibration of commerce and other people from your new tarot deck, you are ready to do a reading. Well, almost. That is, first, you want to choose a format, or how many tarot cards you are going to throw, in what order, and what you are seeking to learn from the tarot cards when you toss them (You will, of course, shuffle the cards well, or have the querent (person you are reading for) shuffle them, and cut them at least 3 times with your/her left hand first).

An easy reading to get started with is the 7 day tarot card reading. A seven day reading gives the querent what s/he expects: a reading covering what energies will be present in the next seven days. After the cards are shuffled and cut, the reader will deal out seven cards, in a horizontal row. Next, before analyzing the cards, the reader will deal seven more cards, one on top of each of the previous seven cards. Two cards are required for each day because the focus of a psychic reading is always energy. And, energy is always in motion.

The first set of tarot cards reflect the energies for the next day. It is important for the tarot reader to pay attention to the potential interactions of the two cards and hence the two energies. What also must be considered is the energy of the querent. I have found that the querent’s energy is often reflected in the position of the card. For example, if the card is positive, such as the Wheel of Fortune, and it lands upright in the reading, the querent will interact with the positive energy in a positive way, and there is likely a positive result: that is, a great day with some goal realized.

If however, the wheel of fortune comes up reversed, (or similarly, if it covered by another card that is not so positive, such as the ten of swords) then the outlook for that day is not as positive, and the cards are more difficult to read. Perhaps the querent will have a great opportunity but will take an inappropriate stance and will not realize on the potential positive energy. Perhaps the querent will get the benefit of the energy, but will have to overcome some drama or other obstacle before acquiring the goal. One benefit to utilizing circular tarot cards, such the Motherpeace tarot, by Vicki Noble and Karen Vogel, is that the card can land, not only upright, or reversed, but also, it can land a little to the right, a little to the left, or a lot to the right or a lot to the left. A circular card can land in any position and can give you a wider degree of variables.

The next two cards will reflect the energies for the day after the day following the reading, and so forth, until the reader details the querent’s (or her own) next week. The reading will get less precise as time goes on. This is because reading tarot cards and telling fortunes are prophetic arts. And, people change all the time. When a person changes, her or his energy changes. How the person thus interacts with the energies coming into her or his life will hence be different. Over the longer term, a shift in a person’s energy will ultimately affect what energies will come into her or his life, rendering any previous reading even less accurate. The reason that a psychic reading tends to be relatively accurate is because most people do not change themselves very quickly or very often (there are many exceptions to this generalization). Use this information to remind yourself that every day is a new opportunity to change how we interact with world, and hence change the world we live in.

What Are Tarot Cards?

Made up of no less than seventy-eight cards, each deck of Tarot cards are all the same. Tarot cards come in all sizes with all types of artwork on both the front and back – some even make their own Tarot cards. Tarot cards were first used by the Celtic people more than two thousand years ago. Many believe that Tarot cards serve only to tell the future, but this is not true. In my previous article, The Year 2012 A Time to Change, I wrote about the Mayan prophecies and the need for global adjustment. The aim of this piece is to provide some detail about the year in question.

Numerology describes 2012 as a five year, a number that invariably brings change, possibly of an unusualor unexpected nature. It would therefore be wise to adopt a flexible stance. The existing order receives a shake up from fresh elements, entering and breathing new life into stagnant conditions. A freedom of thought and movement becomes possible but only on condition that the necessary hard work and organisation was carried out during the previous year. Restlessness leads to increased travel and communications are high on the agenda as this is a time for contact on all levels. Choices, decisions, and temptations confront one and all throughout this entire period consequently, a slow approach will need to be taken when weighing up options. Impulsive actions, financial and otherwise, are to be avoided.

An air of uncertainty will be prevalent in key situations.

The two two’s in the year will reinforce the feminine principal and bring about the need for gentleness, tact and diplomacy in order to harmonise the heightened sensitivities that will be uppermost throughout the year. Challenges directed at our capacity to coexist will occur, and any offence given will result in long-term enmity between the parties concerned. The events that transpire in 2012 will require a strong sense of cooperation, between nations and individuals if we are to maintain good relations with each other and furthermore if we are to collaborate successfully in handling any impending crises. The number two often creates indecision when important judgments have to be made or emergencies need to be dealt with. The Zero in 2012should be construed as raw potential from which anything can come into being. Our thoughts and actions will naturally steer our course ahead.

The One digit moves to a more commanding position in the year number. This means that the Millennium will have inherited a driving force that will impel it forwards. The One is assertive, original, dominant, aggressive and self-centred so an arrogant streak is to be expected in the year causing leaders to feel that they are right irrespective of any facts to the contrary. An ambitious attitude will produce a tendency to make a display of ones abilities that is likely to cause friction on an international level.

We can draw the following conclusions from the information at hand.

The Olympics are to be held in London, England in 2012. Five interlocking rings represent the Olympic symbol and the numerological number for London is two. The final preparations and organisational work should be carried out during 2011 but the Olympics may not be ready on schedule largely due to overconfidence, a laid back approach and misrepresentations regarding available funds. The final cost will substantially exceed the budget. A diplomatic incident involving at least one female can be expected at the sports for some of the reasons that I have outlined in the article body.

Headlines in 2012 will describe two major vehicle collisions. This will be a time to travel with extreme caution, as there will be a tendency to speed and to be unprepared for the unexpected.

Large fires, earthquakes and volcanic activity are presaged mainly due to the influence of the two as it is responsible for fires, as well as ruptures and divisions in the earths crust.

Impulsive and overconfident decisions will cause vital errors of judgement in the financial sector.

The two wants peace and mediation but human nature will cause restlessness to become social unrest. We can expect a period of turmoil during the year.

Unwise leadership coupled with overweening ambition will initiate the ‘rattling of sabres’ between East and West.

Misunderstandings aside, difficulty in communications will arise on both human and technical levels.

We will not be aware of much that is taking place behind closed doors in government and deceptive acts are likely to take place.

These are just a few indications of what can be expected during 2012. The outcome of events will, I feel sure, bring about a change in perception and values for the future. There is no reason for anxiety as this will be a turning point where old gives way to the new. We have travelled a long road in our evolution and 2012 should be considered as another step forwards.

Okay, this is a long list so bear with us. Each of the zodiacs is represented by a figure, a thing or an animal in which the cluster of stars resembles. Aries is represented by the Ram. Taurus is of course the Bull. Gemini is the Twin.

Cancer is the Crab and Leo is the Lion. Virgo is the Virgin, Libra is the Scales and Scorpio is the Scorpion. Sagittarius is the Archer, Capricorn is the Goat, Aquarius is the Water Bearer and finally Pisces is the Fish.
